Before the Storm
- Establish an evacuation zone for your family or household members to go to in case you need to evacuate ahead of an emergency.
- Assemble an emergency kit to include water, non-perishable food, extra batteries, a phone charger, flashlight, battery powered radio, copies of important documents, and personal items such as medications, and a change of clothes. The kit should include at least three to five days worth of necessary materials.
- Stay informed by watching or listening to local weather and news updates and following instructions given by public safety officials. Additionally, sign-up for local emergency alerts offered by your town or state.
- Secure outdoor furniture, including trash cans, children’s toys, and anything else that could be damaged during flooding or high winds.
- Prepare for possible power outages and ensure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
During the Storm
- Do not walk, swim, or drive in flood waters. Flooding conditions are dangerous and contain numerous hazards.
- If possible, seek high ground.
- Remain inside and seek shelter in a safe room. Basements are the first to flood and should be avoided when flooding occurs.
After the Storm

- Avoid exposed wires or damaged powerlines.
- Stay away from unstable structures, including houses or businesses, until deemed safe by a public safety official.
