Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department responded to and extinguished a two-alarm fire in a home on Park Street on Tuesday afternoon.
On Tuesday, June 20, at approximately 4 p.m., the Stoneham Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire at 45 Park St.
Companies arrived to find heavy fire showing from the front of a 2-1/2 story home, struck a second alarm, and used a 2-1/2 inch hose line and a ladder pipe to knock down the heavy fire on the home’s exterior. Two residents of the home were able to escape on their own.
Once exterior flames were knocked down, companies made an aggressive internal attack on the fire using four hose lines.
A firefighter suffered burn injuries while battling the blaze, but was treated at the scene and did not require transport to a hospital. There were no other reported injuries.
The home suffered heavy fire damage on all floors, and two residents were displaced. The Salvation Army responded to the scene to begin assisting those residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Stoneham Fire Investigation Unit.
Firefighters from Reading, Woburn, Wakefield, Melrose, Saugus, and Winchester provided mutual aid at the scene, as did the Stoneham Police Department, Cataldo Ambulance’s Tango 2 rehab vehicle and the Stoneham Department of Public Works.
Firefighters from Malden and Medford covered Stoneham fire stations.
“I’m grateful that the residents were able to get out safely,” said Chief Grafton. “Companies made a very aggressive attack and did a tremendous job knocking down the bulk of the fire before getting inside the home and getting ahead of the fire.”
