STONEHAM — Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department responded to an approximately 4-acre brush fire in the Middlesex Fells Reservation.
On Thursday, June 1, at approximately 3 p.m., the Stoneham Fire Department began receiving reports of smoke in the area of Executive Drive and the Middlesex Fells Reservation.
Engine 2 and Engine 3 responded to search the area, and discovered several separate fires burning in the Middlesex Fells Reservation about 3:30 p.m.
Firefighters battled heat as they had to extend hose lines a significant distance into the forest since there are no hydrants in the area, and water was also shuttled to the scene.
The fires were knocked down by about 6:30 p.m., though companies remain at the scene wetting down the area.
There were no reported injuries.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation provided mutual aid at the scene, and firefighters from Wakefield and Reading covered Stoneham stations.
The cause of the fires remains under investigation by the Stoneham Fire Department.
