To apply for a building permit to install Solar Panels or an Energy Storage System, the first step
in the process is a plan review by the Stoneham Fire Department. The Fire Prevention office will
review all plans and documentation to ensure compliance with the following codes:
- 527 CMR 1 (2021) – Chapter 11, Section 12 – Photovoltaic Systems
- 527 CMR 1 (2021) – Chapter 52 – Energy Storage Systems
- NFPA 855 (2020) – Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy
Storage Systems
Please use the Solar Panel/Energy Storage System Plan Review Application and submit the following to the Fire Prevention Office:
- Solar Array Required Documentation
3 complete sets of plans showing:
o Access Pathways
o Setbacks from ridge
o Meter/inverter/disconnect locations
o Trees that obstruct access to the roof
o Signage - A Check for $100 made out to the Town of Stoneham
- A self-addressed and stamped envelope for us to return the approved plans (unless you
agree to pick them up in person) - Photo of the property from the street
- The completed Solar Panel/Energy Storage System Plan Review Application
Energy Storage System Required Documentation
- 3 complete sets of plans showing:
o Location of ESS and all disconnects
o Diagram of the room or area in which the ESS is to be installed.
o Details on wall construction for rooms or areas where ESS are installed
o Vehicle impact protection (if required)
o Location of interconnected smoke/heat alarms (if required)
o Signage - Manufacturer’s specifications, ratings, and listings of ESS.
- A Check for $100 made out to the Town of Stoneham
- A self-addressed and stamped envelope for us to return the approved plans (unless you
agree to pick them up in person) - The completed Solar Panel/Energy Storage System Plan Review Application
