MWRA Traffic Advisory and
Notice of Public Meeting for Stoneham
The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is in the final phase of construction of a new water pipeline through the Town of Stoneham in order to provide critical redundancy for Stoneham and several other communities in order to ensure an adequate water supply in the event of a sudden break in an existing pipeline.
Beginning Monday, April 29, 2019, construction will begin primarily on Main Street and South Street in Stoneham as well as a small section of Marble Street (see Traffic Plan, PDF) Work on South Street will take up one full lane of the roadway, limiting vehicular traffic to one lane. A detour will be put in place directing cars traveling east on South Street, around Spot Pond (via Fellsway West, Elm Street, and Woodland Road). MBTA buses and emergency vehicles are not subject to this detour. Police details will be utilized to provide traffic and pedestrian safety during construction. Construction work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This work is expected to take 5 to 7 months.
MWRA’s traffic engineers, with assistance from the Town of Stoneham, have developed traffic plans that will maintain traffic flow without increasing vehicular traffic on Wilson, Gorham, Parkway, Fairview and Upland.
MWRA will be holding an informational meeting in the Stoneham High School Auditorium on Wednesday April 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss project specifics.
